"Learn about tattoo great at Bar 35

Master of modern skin ink Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins is the subject of a documentary making its Honolulu debut at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Bar 35. "Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry" chronicles the evolution of modern tattooing through the life of the art's most influential figure.

Sailor Jerry, whose proteges include tattoo greats Don Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, spent most of his career in his tattoo shop on Smith Street catering to servicemen who were stationed in Honolulu during World War II. His iconic designs — sparrows, anchors, hula girls, naval emblems — have become classic tattoo art in modern pop culture and are once again the skin envy of the hip and rebellious. Admission to the screening is free but is limited to the first 150 people who RSVP to www.sailorjerry.com/rsvp.
